Being Ur Beautiful

What’s wrong with the BMI Scale?

So let’s get to the bottom line here, is there really such a thing as the perfect ideal weight? Hmmmm let me think… the answer is hell no! No one can pinpoint what the exact ideal weight is or for that matter what your personal ideal weight should be. There are way too many individual factors such as genetics, muscle density, and height that play a role in your body weight. So why do we care to identify an ideal weight when it’s impossible.

But what about the BMI scale you might be thinking?

Yeah, let’s talk about that. So, the BMI scale (body mass index) is a scale designed to create a ratio of body weight to body height. The ratios get split up into weight categories based on your height, which creates the stigma that an individual can have an ideal weight. Ok but hold on before you start worrying yourself and going look up how to calculate your own BMI, let’s remember a reason the BMI scale is maybe not so accurate. The scale completely disregards the fact the people have a muscle composition. Some more than others. However, whatever amount of muscle you have, remember muscles are much more dense that fat. Dense = they take up more of your body weight and even make you weigh more. When you see these college athletes or NFL players normally their muscle composition is so high their BMI would classify them as overweight. Now we all know good and well they are not in fact overweight, they are very lean and in shape. So basically, if you’ve already calculated your BMI or somehow know where you stand because of your last physical, I’m telling you now to throw it in the garbage. It’s not relevant to determining how healthy or unhealthy you are. Now, health is the overall goal here right? Yes. That’s why it’s important to shift the focus from identifying yourself by the BMI scale and to identifying yourself by the concept called natural healthy weight.

So What is Natural Healthy Weight?

This is the weight your body will maintain with normal/intuitive eating patterns and normal movement of the body. After years of dieting, back and forth of gaining and losing weight, many people have a not so normal relationship with food or exercise. Dieting begets restriction, as restriction begets bingeing. So, if you are engaging or have been engaged with dieting for however long, I can guarantee that you are not at your natural healthy weight. Here is the hold up and it took me forever to come to terms with this myself! Your natural healthy weight might not be what you have in mind and that’s okay. I thought my natural weight should be based on looking aesthetically pleasing to the eye rather than how healthy I was. This is the common misconception for people. Your body isn’t made to look good, it’s made to allow us to live bountiful, fulfilled lives. So, that’s how we should be treating our bodies. After reading that phrase and you still don’t get, think about a time when you were at your lowest body weight. You probably felt good right? But, what were you doing to maintain that low body weight? Were you living your life and treated your body the way you should? Cause I know I wasn’t and I’ll be the first to say it. I was living off rice cakes and burning off whatever calories I put into my body. It’s true, I had attained the body I wanted but I was living so unhealthy mentally and treating my body like it was my enemy. So, here I am living in my natural weight at 138 and happier, more energetic, concentrated, and more motivated than I ever have been. Why? Because I have accepted the static weight I know will fuel me to live the accomplished, fulfilled life that I deserve. I listen to my body’s intuitive signals and trust my body that it knows what it needs!
